Please post brief summaries of your tax day actions with photos if desired as comments to this topic. Since it appears that you can upload photos only in a new post and not as a comment to an existing one, the best solution is to send me the photo (psmith@saintmarys.edu) and I will insert it into your comment. — Peter

For you war tax resisters who file. The IRS has launched a new online tool to determine if you should deduct your state and local sales taxes or income taxes on Schedule A if you make use of itemized deductions. They have an anonymous Sales Tax Calculator you can use online. You must enter your adjusted gross income, number of exemptions, and ZIP code. You’ll usually get an answer within five minutes. Again, it’s anonymous and no personal identifying information needs to be entered. You can find it by going to www.irs.gov and entering “Sales Tax Calculator” in the search box.

Although there are lots of people in this country who oppose the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, there is an almost pathological fear of doing the one thing that helps break their direct connection to these wars: refusing to pay for it through their income taxes.
The concern about consequences for refusing to pay entire Federal income tax is understandable. But why not refuse a small amount, say, $10 and enclose a letter to the IRS about why you’re doing this?
To have an impact on the government, you don’t need to refuse everything. Whether you refuse $10 or $3000 in income taxes, the key is to resist something. The government hates any resistance but the consequences of refusing a small amount are pretty small. Yet the government will be forced to respond. And, if they don’t, well, next year you could always resist more.
