National War Tax Resistance Coordinating Committee

Alternative Funds

War tax resistance alternative funds, which come under a variety of names, are part of the communities of resistance and a positive and cooperative alternative to the dominant social organization in the United States. Alternative funds began to grow in the late 1960s as a way of pooling thousands of federal tax dollars resisted because of the Indochina War. While the funds provide some security from seizure by the IRS or reimbursement if money is seized, most funds also offer interest-free loans and/or grants to community self-help, social change, peace, and human service programs. Putting money into an alternative fund helps to emphasize that resisters are not simply keeping the money for themselves. A few funds were established primarily to hold money in escrow pending the passage of the Peace Tax Fund Bill. Contact the funds directly to inquire about their guidelines and policies.
